Microbrewery Stallhagen Ab was established in 2004 by a group of beer enthusiasts. Today it has over 2,700 shareholders. We are Åland’s oldest and biggest brewery, with modern production facilities in Grelsby, 18 km from Mariehamn. With this new brewery, which was taken into use in 2018, we have a production capacity of 2.5 million litres per year.
Stallhagen developed out of a desire to produce good craft beer primarily for the Ålandic market. As inhabitants of the archipelago, we are used to finding the means to provide for our own needs. For example, we really needed beer.
Our production volume has increased gradually over the years and today we are Finland’s fifth largest microbrewery. Our investments in expanding our production capacity have yielded growing volumes of sales and made our brand known to a larger target group outside of Åland.
Despite this, our original idea remains – Stallhagen is first and foremost a microbrewery. The modern brewery facilities and the latest technology help us to save energy and water and ensure that requirements for quality are met. The craft of brewing is still the same.
Our high quality and good reputation have won us the loyalty of beer enthusiasts beyond the shores of Åland. In addition to Åland, Stallhagen is sold in Finland and Sweden, on the ferries between Finland and Sweden and in selected tax-free shops. Kesko is our reseller in Finland. We are stocked by both the Finnish (Alko) and Swedish (Systembolaget) national liquor stores, and many restaurants and beer pubs in Sweden and Finland have Stallhagen on the menu. Export markets have opened to Belgium and Japan, among others.
The subsidiary, Stallhagen Upplevelser, was founded in 2019. With this development, Pub Stallhagen was merged with Stallhagen Ab. Stallhagen Upplevelser operates the restaurants, tours, the farm shop and arranges music and theatre events at Stallhalla amphitheatre.
The total number of staff employed at both companies is currently 22.
“Stallhagen is the natural choice for customers looking for feeling and taste”
Stallhagen’s business concept has been to develop and market creative, hand-made premium beer products in bottles, cans, and kegs for well-defined market segments. The Stallhagen customer is interested in quality and specialty beers, is eager to combine beer and food and to test new and exciting flavours. Our production philosophy is founded on natural raw ingredients of the highest quality, yielding flavourful craft beers.
The Swedish king, King Gustav Vasa, was a great lover of beer, and since salt was often used in the preservation of food in the 1500’s, at least one jug of beer a day was needed to wash meals down.
During his stays on Åland, Gustav Vasa used Grelsby Kungsgård as his residence. The owners even included stables with a pasture. This is where our name comes from: “stall” (stable), “hagen” (pasture).
Stallhagen is a microbrewery on Åland, in the middle of the archipelago between Sweden and Finland. As inhabitants of the archipelago, we are used to finding the means to provide for our own needs.
Beer, for example.
We really needed that.
